The White Tablecloth
A private dinner starts immaculate and ends with two consenting adults deliberately ruining everything except the mood.
Mara chose the restaurant because it was too polished for them.
White tablecloths. Tiny lamps. Waiters who moved like nobody had ever dropped a fork.
Jonah noticed immediately.
“You hate places like this.”
“I hate behaving in places like this.”
“That is not the same thing.”
“No.”
They had been together for eighteen months, long enough for him to recognise the look she got when she had planned something and intended to pretend she had not.
Dinner itself was innocent. Oysters. Steak. A bottle of red they shared slowly because neither wanted the night to blur.
The game began with dessert.
Mara ordered chocolate mousse and a bowl of strawberries. Jonah ordered nothing.
“You’ll steal mine,” she said.
“I was planning to.”
The waiter disappeared.
Mara dipped one finger into the mousse.
Jonah stared at her.
“That is appalling etiquette.”
“I know.”
She put the finger in her mouth and cleaned it slowly.
Jonah’s expression changed.
There it was.
The little private shift between them that could happen in a crowded room without anybody else noticing.
Mara smiled.
“Behave.”
“You started it.”
“I touched dessert.”
“You weaponised dessert.”
She laughed and left it there.
For another forty minutes they were respectable adults.
At home, Mara put the leftover strawberries on the kitchen bench and disappeared upstairs.
Jonah found her ten minutes later in the bedroom wearing an old white shirt of his and nothing else.
On the bedside table sat the strawberries, chocolate sauce, a towel and a large plastic sheet folded with suspicious neatness.
Jonah stopped in the doorway.
“You planned this.”
“Obviously.”
“The tablecloth was foreshadowing?”
“Don’t make it literary.”
She pointed at the sheet.
“Help me.”
They spread it across the bed.
The practical preparation made both of them laugh, which was part of why Mara liked this with him. Nothing had to be solemn to be erotic.
She sat in the middle of the bed and held up the bottle of chocolate sauce.
“Rules?” Jonah asked.
“Nothing near eyes. Nothing that stains permanently. Stop means stop.”
“And the shirt?”
“Sacrificial.”
“Good shirt.”
“Formerly good shirt.”
Jonah climbed onto the bed.
Mara handed him the bottle.
“Go on.”
He drizzled a thin line of chocolate across the white cotton over her chest.
Mara looked down.
“That’s pathetic.”
“I was being tasteful.”
“Wrong evening.”
He squeezed harder.
Chocolate ran over the shirt, warm from the room, dark against white. Mara gasped when he spread it with his palm across her breast through the fabric.
“Better?”
“Much.”
He kissed her through the mess, mouth pressing against chocolate and cotton, then pulled the shirt open. Buttons popped loose. Mara laughed as one bounced onto the plastic sheet.
“Sacrificial,” she reminded him.
Jonah poured chocolate directly over her bare breasts.
This time she did not laugh.
His mouth followed it.
Sticky fingers slid over her ribs and stomach. Mara grabbed a strawberry, crushed it deliberately against his chest and smeared the red pulp downward.
Jonah looked at the ruined shirt hanging from her shoulders, then at himself.
“You’ve escalated.”
“That was the plan.”
He pushed her onto her back.
They made a ridiculous mess.
Chocolate on skin. Strawberry juice across Jonah’s stomach. Cream Mara fetched from downstairs because apparently there had not been enough ammunition.
The mess stopped feeling comic when Jonah spread her legs.
He paused.
“Still good?”
“Yes.”
He kept the food away from where it did not belong, exactly as they had agreed. Instead he kissed the inside of her thighs, hands sticky on her hips, then used his clean fingers between her legs.
Mara’s head dropped back.
“That’s cheating.”
“How?”
“You found a clean hand.”
“I contain multitudes.”
She laughed until his fingers curled inside her.
Then she stopped laughing.
Jonah watched her face as he fucked her with two fingers, thumb circling her clit. The absurdity of chocolate on his shoulder and cream across her stomach only made the seriousness of the sensation sharper.
Mara reached for him.
“Come here.”
He moved over her.
She wrapped her sticky hand around his cock.
Jonah closed his eyes.
“Jesus.”
“Too much?”
“No.”
She stroked him slowly, watching the muscles in his stomach tighten.
He kissed her. She tasted chocolate on his mouth.
When he entered her, Mara hooked both legs around him and pulled him deeper.
The plastic sheet crackled beneath them.
Jonah laughed once against her neck.
“Sexy.”
“Shut up and fuck me.”
He did.
Slow at first, then harder when she asked. Mara gripped his shoulders and left brown fingerprints across his back. Every movement spread the mess further. The pristine room they had started with existed only in memory.
She came with her mouth against his shoulder, trying and failing to stay quiet.
Jonah kept moving until she whispered, “Now.”
He pulled out and came across her stomach, adding one final mess to everything else.
For a minute they simply lay there.
Then Mara looked around.
The shirt was destroyed.
The sheet looked like a crime scene designed by a pastry chef.
Jonah had strawberry pulp in his hair.
She began laughing.
He looked offended.
“You did this.”
“I know.”
“You’re cleaning the shower.”
“Absolutely not.”
They showered together anyway.
It took longer than the sex.
Later, wrapped in towels on the bathroom floor, Jonah looked at her.
“Next time?”
Mara considered.
“Black sheets.”
“That defeats the visual.”
“Fine. White again.”
He smiled.
She had already known the answer.
