The Dress Rehearsal

A trans woman preparing for her first glamorous night out with a new date discovers he is far more interested in the woman wearing the dress than the dress itself.

Lena changed dresses four times.

By the fifth, she had stopped pretending the problem was the dresses.

Lena was thirty-two. She had been living openly as a woman for three years. She had dated, slept with people, been rejected, desired, fetishised, loved briefly and disappointed more than once.

None of that explained why dinner with Adrian had reduced her bedroom to fabric casualties.

Her phone buzzed.

ADRIAN: Downstairs. No rush.

Lena looked in the mirror.

Black dress. Bare shoulders. Heels she could actually walk in.

LENA: Dangerous thing to tell someone who has changed four times.

ADRIAN: Five?

LENA: How dare you.

When she reached the lobby, Adrian stood from the sofa.

He was thirty-five and usually difficult to surprise.

Tonight he simply looked at her.

“Say something.”

“I had something.”

“And?”

“Gone.”

She smiled. “Acceptable answer.”

Dinner was easy.

That surprised her.

Adrian didn't turn the evening into a conversation about her transition. He already knew she was trans. She had told him before their first coffee because she preferred information to drama.

He had said okay, then asked whether she preferred Thai or Italian.

That had been three weeks ago.

After dinner they walked back towards her apartment.

At the entrance Adrian stopped.

“I'd like to come upstairs.”

Lena looked at him.

“But?”

“No but. I'm trying to ask rather than assume.”

“Yes.”

Upstairs, the black dress suddenly felt much smaller.

Adrian stood near the window while Lena poured water.

“Wine?”

“I want to remember everything.”

“That was smooth.”

“It sounded less ridiculous internally.”

He approached.

“Can I kiss you?”

“Yes.”

The kiss was gentle.

Then Adrian's hand settled at her waist and she pulled him closer.

The second kiss wasn't gentle.

She pressed him against the wall.

He laughed softly. “Okay.”

“What?”

“I misread who was going to be nervous.”

“I am nervous.”

“You have an unusual way of showing it.”

His hands moved down her back.

At the zip he paused.

“Can I?”

She nodded.

The dress opened.

That was when the nerves returned.

Adrian felt the change and stopped.

“Talk to me.”

Lena looked away.

“I don't want tonight to turn into a medical seminar.”

“It won't.”

“And I don't want you pretending not to notice my body.”

“I won't.”

She looked at him. “What do you want?”

“You.”

“Specific.”

“You in the black dress. You out of it. You making jokes because you're nervous. You pushing me against walls.”

Lena smiled.

“And if there's something you don't want touched, tell me. If there's something you do want, tell me that too.”

There.

No performance of ignorance. No fascination disguised as acceptance.

Just a question.

Lena let the dress fall.

Adrian looked at her.

“Still lost your speech?”

“Completely.”

“Good.”

They undressed each other slowly.

When Adrian reached between her legs, he waited.

Lena guided his hand.

“This is okay.”

He touched her the way she showed him.

No assumptions. No awkwardness.

Lena closed her eyes.

“Don't stop.”

His mouth moved to her breasts while his hand continued.

Later she pushed him onto the bed and knelt between his legs.

Adrian inhaled sharply when she took him into her mouth.

His hand touched her hair.

“Okay?”

She nodded without stopping.

When she climbed beside him again, he kissed her.

“Condoms?” she asked.

“Bag.”

“Prepared.”

“Hopeful.”

They laughed.

They talked briefly about what they both wanted.

Lena had no interest in making her body perform a role for somebody else's expectations.

Adrian seemed relieved by the directness.

They found a rhythm that worked for them, hands and mouths and bodies pressed together without treating one particular act as the definition of sex.

Lena came with her face buried against his neck.

Adrian held her through it.

Afterwards they lay tangled beneath the sheet.

The black dress was on the floor.

Adrian looked at it.

“So was that number five?”

“Yes.”

“I liked it.”

Lena turned her head. “Only the dress?”

He kissed her shoulder.

“Not remotely.”

She smiled into the pillow.

In the morning, she left the other four dresses where they were.

The black one went back on the hanger.
