The Room at the End of the Hall
A couple books the last room in a tired hotel so they can be rougher than their thin-walled flat allows, and the corridor becomes part of the night.
The hotel had been a commercial traveller's place in some earlier decade, and it still behaved like one. Long carpet. A lift that sighed. An ice machine opposite room 118 that clattered every twenty minutes. Freya had booked 120 because the map showed it at the end of the hall, one neighbour only, and a fire door between them and the stairs. Ellis carried the bag. Neither of them had packed for a weekend. They had packed for a night they could not have on the third floor of their building, where the woman next door coughed when their headboard tapped.
In the car they had said the limits again, because Freya wanted them said close to the doing. She was thirty-seven. He was thirty-nine. Hard was welcome. Pain that left a mark on her arse was welcome. Pain on her face was not. He could pull her hair if he gathered it first. He could hold her down. Choking was out. A word, red, stopped everything. Yellow meant change what you are doing, not flee the building. Come inside her, yes. She had said that twice, so he would not get noble about it at the last second.
The key card failed once. The green light felt like a small permission. Inside, the room was brown and clean and too warm. Freya killed the rattle of the radiator and stood at the window. The car park was half empty. No one in the hall. Ellis locked the door and put the chain on, then looked at her.
"Still the list?"
"Still the list. I want to hear you check in. I don't want you polite."
He kissed her hard enough to bump her into the wardrobe. The mirror knocked. Freya laughed into his mouth and then stopped laughing when he turned her and bent her over the low dresser, the one with the kettle tray. Her dress went up. He dragged her underwear down and left it at her knees, which made her step-width stupid and hot. The first spank surprised a sound out of her. The next four were deliberate, his hand broad, the skin lighting up. He slid two fingers into her and found her already slick.
"Colour."
"Green. Harder."
He spanked her again, then pushed his cock in to the base. Freya grabbed the kettle tray and held on. Ellis fucked her with the ugly useful pace they never got at home, one hand on her hip, the other gathering her hair the way they had agreed. The dresser thumped the wall. She thought of the empty room beyond it and moaned louder, testing the end of the hall. No cough came back. The freedom went straight to her cunt.
"Listen," she said. "No one. Don't you dare ease off."
He didn't. He pulled out, walked her to the bed, and put her on her back with her legs up, underwear finally off, and fucked her where she could see his face. The headboard was bolted, thank God, and still ticked. Ellis spat on her clit and rubbed while he drove into her. Freya came fast, clenching, one hand over her own mouth out of habit and then not, because the habit belonged to the flat. He fucked her through it. When her thighs jumped he asked colour and she said green in a wrecked voice and pulled him deeper with her heels.
The ice machine went off in the corridor. They both laughed, breathless, and he did not stop. Freya rolled them, rode him hard enough to sting her already spanked skin, and came again with his thumb on her clit and his other hand heavy on her thigh, holding her down onto him. She told him to come in her. He did, buried, a low sound against her collarbone, staying there while his cock pulsed.
They lay in the overheated room and listened to the machine finish its cycle. Ellis got water from the bathroom tap because the glasses were small. Freya stood, dress half on, and felt him leak down her thigh onto the hotel carpet. She did not wipe it yet.
"Again before we sleep," she said. "Slower if you have to. I want the door chain on and your hand in my hair and the corridor empty. Then breakfast like nothing happened."
"Yellow on the hair if your scalp complains."
"Agreed."
He bent her over the end of the bed when he was hard again and fucked her with less force and no less intent, checking her face in the black mirror of the television. She came a third time with two of his fingers on her clit and his cock deep, and he added to the mess inside her, shaking. After, they showered badly in the narrow stall, ordered nothing, and slept to the ice machine as if it were a clock.
In the morning the hall was full of suitcase wheels and a family arguing softly about the lift. Freya walked the length of it in yesterday's dress, Ellis beside her, both of them ordinary. At the fire door she touched his wrist.
"Same room if they have it next month," she said.
"End of the hall," he said. "Or it doesn't work."
She smiled, sore and precise, and pushed the door open onto the stairs.
Halfway down, a porter came up with a tray and nodded at them as if they were any couple late for checkout. Freya nodded back. The soreness under her dress was private, the chain upstairs already unhooked by Ellis out of habit, the end room already returning to brown carpet and a kettle no one had boiled. In the car park she stopped with her hand on the door.
"I don't want this to become the only place we tell the truth," she said.
"It won't." Ellis threw the bag onto the back seat. "It can be the place we are louder. Home can have the list too, just not the headboard."
Freya got in. The hotel sat behind them, ordinary in daylight, the end of the hall invisible from the street. She shifted on the seat and felt the night answer. "Next month, then. Same limits. Book it before I talk myself into being sensible."
"Already thinking of the key card," he said, and pulled into the traffic.
