The Dress Code

The Dress Code — intense adult fiction built around character, anticipation and a strong payoff.

The message arrived at 4:17 on Friday afternoon.

Black dress. No jewellery. Hair up. Eight o'clock.

Sienna read it beneath the fluorescent lights of a supermarket aisle while holding a bag of rice.

At thirty-four, she had received romantic messages in better settings. None had made her forget why she was buying rice.

She typed: Anything else?

Nathan replied almost immediately.

Be on time.

Sienna smiled at her phone.

She and Nathan had been exploring the dynamic for three months. Slowly. Deliberately. What surprised Sienna was how much of the excitement happened before he touched her.

A message could do it.

Three words could do it.

Be on time.

At seven fifty-eight she stood outside his apartment in the requested black dress, hair pinned up, jewellery left at home.

Nathan opened the door.

His gaze moved over her once.

“On time.”

“Technically early.”

“Don't ruin it.”

She stepped inside.

Nathan's apartment was unchanged. Same lamp. Same books. Same ridiculous ceramic dog his sister had given him. Yet the dress code transformed the familiar room.

“Phone,” he said.

Sienna handed it over.

He placed it face down on the shelf.

“Drink?”

“Water.”

He brought her a glass.

The normality was almost unbearable.

“You're doing this deliberately,” she said.

“Doing what?”

“Pretending this is an ordinary Friday.”

Nathan sat opposite her.

“It is an ordinary Friday.”

Sienna gave him a look.

“You're wearing the dress.”

“Because you told me to.”

“And?”

She felt the answer before she said it.

“Because I wanted to.”

Nathan nodded.

“Important distinction.”

The game began there.

Not with equipment or theatrics. With posture. Eye contact. Small instructions that became difficult only because Sienna knew she had agreed to follow them.

Stand there.

Wait.

Look at me.

Again.

Each instruction stripped away another layer of everyday independence without touching the independence underneath. She could stop. She didn't.

Nathan walked around her once.

“You chose the dress?”

“Yes.”

“Why this one?”

“You like it.”

“That's not the question.”

Sienna breathed out.

“Because I like what happens to your face when I wear it.”

Nathan stopped in front of her.

“Better.”

The praise landed harder than it should have.

Sienna hated that he noticed.

“Don't look so pleased.”

“Was that an instruction?”

She nearly laughed.

“No.”

“Then behave.”

Heat climbed into her face.

Nathan touched the back of her neck, fingers beneath the pinned hair. The first physical contact of the evening was almost gentle.

Sienna leaned toward it.

He removed his hand.

“Oh, that's cruel.”

“No. Cruel wasn't on the list.”

“Annoying, then.”

“Very much on the list.”

He made her wait again.

That was the secret she had discovered about herself. Waiting could be intensely erotic when she knew exactly what she was waiting for but not when it would arrive.

Nathan let the anticipation build until Sienna's composure became mostly decorative.

Then he kissed her.

The change was immediate.

Sienna caught his shirt. Nathan caught her wrists and lowered them, not forcefully, simply reminding her of the game.

She looked at him.

“Right,” she whispered.

“Right.”

The second kiss was hotter.

The evening moved from controlled instructions into passion and back again. Every pause sharpened what followed. Every small act of obedience made Sienna more aware that she was choosing it.

When Nathan finally told her she could let her hair down, she pulled the pins free one by one and dropped them on the table.

“Better?” she asked.

He looked at her.

“Much.”

Sienna crossed the room and kissed him before he could issue another instruction.

Nathan laughed against her mouth.

“Rebellious.”

“Write me up.”

“Later.”

The bedroom door closed soon after.

Whatever discipline remained in the evening became considerably less tidy behind it.

Near midnight Sienna found her phone still face down on the shelf.

There was a new message from Nathan, sent while she had been in the bathroom.

She looked across the room at him.

“Seriously?”

“Read it.”

Sienna opened the message.

Same dress. Next Friday.

She looked up.

“Bossy.”

Nathan smiled.

Sienna typed her reply even though he was standing six metres away.

Make me wait all week and I'll be unbearable.

His phone buzzed.

He read it.

“That's the idea.”

By Wednesday, Sienna had started to resent the black dress hanging on her wardrobe door.

Every morning it reminded her of Friday.

Every evening it reminded her that Friday had not arrived.

Nathan sent no further instructions.

That was deliberate. She knew it was deliberate. Knowing made it worse.

On Thursday night she finally messaged him.

You are enjoying this far too much.

His reply took nine minutes.

Yes.

Sienna stared at the single word.

Bastard.

Three dots appeared, disappeared, then returned.

Tomorrow. Eight.

Nothing else.

Friday moved with insulting slowness.

At seven fifty-five Sienna stood outside Nathan's building wearing the same black dress. This time she had chosen different shoes.

At seven fifty-nine she knocked.

Nathan opened the door and looked at her.

His eyes dropped briefly to the shoes.

“Those weren't specified.”

“Rebellion.”

“Apparently.”

“Problem?”

Nathan stepped aside.

“Come in and find out.”

Sienna's pulse jumped.

She entered.

The ceramic dog was still on the shelf. The lamp was still crooked. Everything looked exactly the same.

Nothing felt the same.

Nathan closed the door.

“Phone.”

Sienna handed it over without being asked twice.

He placed it face down.

“Hair.”

“Up.”

“Jewellery?”

“None.”

“Good.”

One word.

That was all it took.

Sienna smiled despite herself.

“Stop looking pleased,” Nathan said.

“Was that an instruction?”

He looked at her.

She laughed.

Friday had finally arrived.

Nathan let her stand there for several seconds, saying nothing.

Sienna knew exactly what he was doing. The silence itself had become part of their language.

“You're staring,” she said.

“Assessing the unauthorised shoes.”

“And?”

“I'm considering the consequences.”

Sienna's smile widened.

“Take your time.”

“Careful.”

That single word changed her expression.

Nathan noticed.

Of course he noticed.

Sienna stepped closer and lowered her voice.

“I waited all week.”

“I know.”

“Then stop making me wait.”

Nathan kissed her.

The dress code had done its job.
